De La Soul son recordados como la principal pandilla de Native Tongues, esos raperos que se volvieron discretos, conscientemente reflexivos y jazzísticos frente a las amenazas hardcore del gangsta. Pero A Tribe Called Quest pudo haber sido incluso más fuerte, especialmente en su excelente segundo álbum, The Low End Theory, con su bajo retumbante y sus abundantes samples de jazz. Según la apertura "Excursions", el viejo del rapero Q-Tip dice que el jazz-rap del disco "le recordaba al bebop", y Q se llama a sí mismo "prominente como Shakespeare". Pero si Charlie Parker hubiera escrito pareados poéticos y los hubiera respaldado con ritmos de batería funky y líneas de bajo estilo Ron Carter tan irresistibles, podría haber sido tan grande como el Bardo y el Hermano James combinados. - David Cantwell.
