Armé du hit psych-sludge dévastateur « Negasonic Teenage Warhead », Monster Magnet a hissé Dopes to Infinity — le guitariste-chanteur Dave Wyndorf et le reste de son groupe du New Jersey — à un nouveau niveau de notoriété rock. Le troisième album du groupe a propulsé des paroles tournées vers l’espace et des hooks proto-metal enfumés dans la stratosphère, tout en posant les bases de leur successeur certifié or, sorti en 1997, Powertrip.  Fait unique, Wyndorf a écrit « Ego, the Living Planet » en hommage au personnage cosmique de Marvel Comics du même nom ; quelques années plus tard, le scénariste des X-Men, Grant Morrison, honorerait Monster Magnet en nommant un nouveau mutant Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
