Per l'occasione, Scaggs ha riunito una band da studio piena di stelle, con musicisti prestigiosi come i chitarristi Doyle Bramhall II, Ray Parker Jr. e Charlie Sexton, il bassista Willie Weeks, il batterista Jim Keltner e il tastierista Jim Cox, oltre allo stesso Boz alla chitarra, al basso e al vocoder, e al suo vecchio amico Jack Walroth all'armonica.

Out of the Blues include anche quattro canzoni scritte o co-scritte da Jack Walroth, amico di lunga data e spirito musicale affine di Scaggs, un bluesman anticonvenzionale che Scaggs conobbe negli anni '60, quando entrambi vivevano a Madison, nel Wisconsin, e che si trasferì a San Francisco più o meno nello stesso periodo di Scaggs.
