There is perhaps none more black in Black Flag’s discography than 1984’s Slip It In, a fiendishly uncomfortable collection exploring anxiety, depression and utter depravity. Guitarist Greg Ginncontinues to drift the band from their hardcore origins towards a mix of metallic dirges and jazz-freaked avant-noise. The infamously title track is one of their most controversial and seriously questionable outings, and it culminates with a moaning outro from frontman Henry Rollins and future L7 member Suzi Gardner. The bleakness continues through its tales of caffeine-agitated lowlifes (“Black Coffee”) and the moment you realize you’re trapped inside your mind (“My Ghetto”).
