Na de doorbraak van 1992 volgde in 1994 dit meesterwerk. Met 'Images and Words' vestigden ze hun naam, en met 'Awake' gingen ze nog verder. Gitarist John Petrucci betrad voor het eerst de studio met een 7-snarige gitaar, wat een donkerder en scherper geluid opleverde. Het album markeert ook het vertrek van toetsenist Kevin Moore, wiens persoonlijke en creatieve afstand tot zijn bandleden voelbaar is in de teksten. Images and Words, Awake found the Boston prog-fusionists leaning even further into their fancifully complex, sometimes balladic approach. Guitar icon John Petrucci also brought a 7-string into the studio for the first time, which added a darker and edgier style of riffing to “Caught in a Web” and lead single “Lie.” The transitional release was Dream Theater’s last with founding keyboardist Kevin Moore, whose lyrics to “6:00” reflect the personal and creative distancing between he and his soon-to-be former bandmates.
