Hoewel ze sinds het begin van de jaren negentig al alt-rockgiganten waren, is het wild eclectische, met ideeën gevulde en legacy-bepalende derde album van Smashing Pumpkins misschien wel hun mooiste uur. Mellon Collie is Billy Corgan's koortsachtig geïnspireerde opus van met metaal bekleed gitaargeweld ("Bullet with Butterfly Wings," "Zero"), symfonische rock ("Tonight, Tonight") en met elektronica pulserende coming-of-age-hymnes ("1979"). Het 28 nummers tellende epos bevat ook een schat aan verborgen parels. Een van de meest bombastische rockalbums van die tijd, nu geleverd als een luxe boxset met vier albums.
