As great as Slayer’s Venom-injected Show No Mercy album is, Hell Awaits is where Slayer officially start sounding like Slayer — guitarist Kerry King has said so, himself. Recorded with producer Rick Rubin, the band’s 1985 sophomore LP levels up the depravity with speedier tempos, complex riffery and profoundly demonic incantations. What awaits you in this beastly 40th anniversary box set? It includes the original album remastered on “Fire Splatter” vinyl, a double live LP recorded in Bochum, Germany, replica tour posters and backstage laminates, and a hell of a lot more.

Vinyl Box Set:
3 LPs total: 7-track Hell Awaits + 18-track live bonus audio (Live from Bochum 1985):

  • 60-page book (12" size)
  • Hell Awaits album (in gatefold sleeve, 1xLP) mastered and restored from original 1985 production tapes by Patrick W. Engel at Temple Of Disharmony in February 2025. Vinyl color = Fire Splatter
  • Live from Bochum 1985 (in gatefold sleeve, 2xLP) - 18 live tracks never before released physically or digital
  • Replica ticket from the Bochum show
  • Replica Hell Awaits tour laminate
  • Hell Awaits tour poster (German dates)
  • Slipmat
  • Band posters
  • Replica merch flyer
  • Replica Satanic Wehrmacht newsletter
  • 2 flyers

Adam C. ★★★★★

Finally upgraded from my beat-up original pressing and the remaster on this 3LP actually made me notice the bass in "Hell Awaits" for the first time. The 40th anniversary pressing is dead quiet too, no crackle at all.

Andrew ★★★★☆

The remaster on this pressing finally gives the bass some room — "Hell Awaits" sounds heavier than the copy I've been spinning for years. My only gripe is the box itself feels a little flimsy for a 40th anniversary set, but the 3LP gatefold and booklet make up for it.

Madison C. ★★★★☆

The gatefold jacket alone is worth it, loads of photos and liner notes I hadn't seen before. Only gripe is the box corners arrived slightly dinged, but the records themselves play clean with barely any surface noise.
