Tomahawk’s 2001 self-titled debut was delivered by the supergroup braintrust of vocalist Mike Patton (Faith No More), guitarist Duane Denison (The Jesus Lizard), drummer John Stanier (Helmet, Battles) and bassist Kevin Rutamis (Melvis, the Cows). It’s a see-sawing subversion of steel string-scraping Spaghetti Western-isms, depraved Delta blues, muscle-flexing alt-metal riffage and experimental melodicism. Future Tomahawk releases would plunge the act into even more avant garde territory, but their first crack of the bat is still awesomely entertaining and intriguingly weird.
