De La Soul são lembrados como a principal trupe de Native Tongues, aqueles rappers que se tornaram discretos, pensativos e jazzísticos diante das ameaças hardcore do gangsta rap. Mas A Tribe Called Quest pode ter sido ainda mais forte, especialmente no seu excelente segundo álbum, The Low End Theory, com graves fortes e amostras jazzísticas pesadas. Segundo a faixa de abertura "Excursions," o velho do rapper Q-Tip diz que o jazz-rap do disco "lhe lembrava o bebop," e Q chama-se a si próprio "proeminente como Shakespeare."
