Os Carcass não eram tímidos quanto às suas proclividades macabras quando os pioneiros do goregrind britânico entraram em cena em 1988. Com canções intituladas "Genital Grinder" e "Carbonized Eyesockets", e uma capa de álbum tão violentamente hedionda que ainda hoje não pode ser vendida na maioria das lojas de discos, Reek of Putrefaction é death-metal no sentido mais literal — uma vala comum em decomposição de gritos gorgolejantes, blast-beats esmagadores e riffs horrendos tornados ainda mais feios com golfadas de distorção. Ainda hoje revolve estômagos.
